Job Description

A Global Insurer is looking to hire a Senior Middle Market Underwriter to join their team in San Francisco.

This individual must have strong retail and broker relationships in San Francisco and have at least 3 years experince managing mid markert policies and renewals.

This is a Hybrid role with 1-2 days a week in the office. Howerver they can consider full remote depending on distance to the office.

The Role

  • Manage underwriting for new and renewal business to achieve regional and global Line of Business (LoB) targets.
  • Oversee large accounts, handling negotiations on participation, pricing, and terms and conditions.
  • Manage broker portfolios to optimize profitability and drive business growth.
  • Act as a technical specialist for at least one sub-LoB, industry, or product line such as General Liability, Umbrella, Commercial Auto, Commercial Property, or Workers Compensation.
  • Underwrite and assess natural catastrophe accumulation and model interpretations as applicable.
  • Underwrite international insurance programs for relevant LoBs.
  • Ensure compliance with LoB governance frameworks, including underwriting authorities, global standards, and guidelines.
  • Arrange and bind facultative reinsurance prior to policy inception.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records for each transaction and risk handled.
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and other stakeholders to support business acquisition and retention.
  • Manage and resolve complex underwriting referrals, re-underwriting as needed.

Required skills

  • 3-12 years experience of Commercial Property & Casualty underwriting experience, preferably in Middle Market.
  • Established relationships with brokers and thorough knowledge of the regional/local market landscape.
  • Strong understanding of legal, regulatory, and competitive frameworks.
  • Undergraduate degree in Economics, Finance, Insurance Management, or Business Administration (preferred).
  • Completion of professional insurance qualifications (e.g., CPCU) is advantageous.
