Job Description

The Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of Road Maintenance Supervisor.

There is currently one vacancy in the Department of Public Works. Under the direction of a Road Maintenance Manager, Road Maintenance Supervisors serve as a first line working supervisor with responsibility for overseeing a small crew involved in road maintenance and road construction activities. Road Maintenance Supervisors are responsible for the overall quality and quantity of work produced by their assigned crew, training crew members so they have the necessary skills to do the job, facilitating efforts to improve work methods and encourage crews to "work smarter and not harder", creating a positive motivational environment for the crew, and ensuring that high quality customer service is provided.

The ideal candidate for the Road Maintenance Supervisor position will:

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

* Planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and participating in road maintenance and construction activities as part of a crew within an assigned area.

* Supervising, training, evaluating, and instructing a small group of subordinate personnel.

* Investigating and resolving citizen complaints and preparing reports of findings and actions taken.

* Reading and interpreting plans; transferring grades from survey stakes.

* Administering a safety program by ensuring employees' compliance with safety practices and procedures.

* Administering departmental policies and procedures.

* Performing related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

* Practices and procedures including construction and maintenance methods and techniques.

* Road construction and maintenance equipment and its use.

* Safety practices relating to public works projects.

* Basic arithmetic.

* Weights and measures.

Skill/Ability to:

* Foster teamwork and service excellence through example.

* Organize, plan, lay out and coordinate the work of a small group of people.

* Supervise, train, evaluate and instruct subordinate personnel.

* Use personal initiative to analyze and solve problems.

* Read and interpret simple plans and specifications and transfer grades from survey stakes.

* Enforce common safety practices and procedures.

* Communicate verbally and in writing.

* Prepare clear and comprehensive reports.

* Work with basic arithmetic computations.

* Work effectively and courteously with the public and with coworkers.

* Bend, stand and walk for extended periods of time.

* Lift and carry heavy equipment (50 lbs. min.) and supplies (50 lbs. min.) used in the course of the work, such as jackhammers, pumps, piping and paving materials.

* Meet Department of Transportation (DOT) drug testing requirements and standards.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

* Experience: Four years of experience in road maintenance and construction work.

Licensure/Certification:

* Possession of a class C California driver license or equivalent.

* Possession of a Class A California driver license with tanker endorsement.

Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, extra-help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score

The examination process will consist of a written exam (weight: Pass/Fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
