Join to apply for the Claims Adjuster role at Metropolitan Utilities District Position Summary Under supervision, the Claims Adjuster is responsible for investigating and evaluating claims made against and on behalf of the District. The Claims Adjuster will gather and preserve evidence and information related to claim investigations. The Claims Adjuster will also be responsible for regulatory compliance pursuant to Nebraska Admin Code Title 155. Education Required - Bachelor's Degree in Business, Safety Management, Criminal Justice, Engineering, Construction Management or a related field Minimum Requirements Required - Minimum of 2 years of experience investigating and evaluating either first or party claims. In lieu of this requirement, the successful candidate must demonstrate commensurate work experience. Licenses, Certifications and/or Testing Required - Have and maintain a valid driver's license Upon Hire Required - Employee(s) in this position are covered under the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol testing provisions. This includes post-offer, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, follow-up, and return to duty testing. Upon Hire Required - Pre-employment Background Check & Drug Screen Upon Hire Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to act independently without detailed direction, the ability to multi-task, maintain strict confidentiality, exercise discretion and make sound decisions within assigned authority. (Advanced proficiency) Efficient written and verbal communication skills, in English, to assist internal and external customers, co-workers and management professionally, regardless of provocation. (Advanced proficiency) Strong organizational, record‑keeping and time management skills to ensure detailed records are maintained for claims filed against and on behalf of the District. (Advanced proficiency) Proficiency with personal computers, tablets, and/or other electronic devices to include familiarity with, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise‑wide software (e.g., SAP). Must be proficient with software routinely used within three (3) months of being placed in this position. (Intermediate proficiency) Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as required. (Intermediate proficiency) Ability to investigate claims sites which require navigating all types of terrain to include, but not limited to, accessing ditches, fire scenes and accident scenes. (Intermediate proficiency) The position is on call up to 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Ability to work outside in all weather conditions on a frequent basis for short periods of time and occasionally for extended periods of time; this position is subject to. Essential Functions Investigate property damage and/or personal injury claims on behalf of and against the District arising out of its operations. Interview and take statements from witnesses and claimants; document the scene of incidents, identify responsible parties and recover expenses and costs for repair(s). Ensure claims are well organized and properly archived. Negotiate and recommend settlements of minor claims and assist with more substantial claims. Obtain the approval of the Senior Vice President, General Counsel prior to offering settlements to claimants. Investigate and document vehicle accidents involving District vehicles. Conduct necessary correspondence and contact with attorneys, doctors, insurance companies, agents, loss adjusters, claimants, Department of Motor Vehicles, City officials, police and fire departments, contractors, plumbers, transit and utilities as needed to obtain and provide claim information. Evaluate claims, confer with legal staff and recommend settlements. Prepare releases and make settlements with approval of the Senior Vice President, General Counsel. Identify and report hazardous conditions involving District property or personnel to the Senior Vice President, General Counsel. Compile statistics of claims as to amounts paid and collected on claims, number and type. Maintain appropriate records and files for each case, and provide monthly reports of claims. Notify the State Fire Marshall or the National Resource Center of certain qualifying events related to gas emergencies. Prepare comprehensive documentation for each claim and ensure collected evidence is preserved in the event of litigation. At discretion of the Senior Vice President, General Counsel, will drive the District’s designated claim’s vehicle home daily and will be the primary person available for after‑hour emergency call‑out regarding claim matters. Handle stresses related to effectively completing the above‑referenced responsibilities. Fulfill responsibilities common to all Supervisory, Professional and Administrative positions as stated.
