POSITION SUMMARY: Performs specialized life sustaining procedures in a hospital-based advance care ambulance service. Responsible for providing immediate emergency care and transport of the critically ill or injured under direction of medical control physician. Has successfully completed, as a minimum, the United States Department of Transportation's Emergency Medical Technician-Ambulance curriculum, passed the department's approved written and practical examinations and is currently certified as an EMT.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DETAILED DUTIES:
* Demonstrates flexibility in willingness to pick up extra call, work extra days as census/workload requires.
* Shares knowledge gained from continuing education programs.
* Teaches classes for the Ambulance Department. Involved with department by participating in teaching for the Ambulance Department.
* Logs all runs appropriately. Thoroughly completes run sheets and charges in a timely manner.
* Maintains knowledge of use of ambulance equipment by attending departmental in-services, or following up with education coordinator, in absent.
* Maintains operational status of ambulances by restocking supplies and equipment as required.
* Maintains operational status of ambulances by checking oxygen tanks.
* Maintains operational status of ambulances by cleaning ambulance, both inside and outside.
* Demonstrates proficiency in the following area: anatomy and physiology; use of equipment; patient care of life and limb; correct reporting procedures with appropriate patient information; correct reporting on run sheets; has control of self at scene; efficient communication ability to hospital and/or medical director.
* Performs the following procedures according to policy: chest physiotherapy, handheld nebulizer treatment, aerosol therapy, oxygen therapy, pediatric aerosol tent, oxyhood, ultrasonic nebulizer, incentive spirometry and holter monitor. Performs ECGs and follow up paperwork. Obtains a clear tracing and transmits to the proper place.
* Completes annual review of emergency vehicle operations driving policy.
* Completes annual review of Iowa laws regarding emergency vehicle operations.
* Assists in emergency room under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
* Current EMS certification from the State of Iowa.
* BLS (CPR) certified or obtained within 3 months of employment.
* ACLS, PALS
* Valid chauffeurs license in the State of Iowa.
* Current AED training.
* Current operational level Hazmat training.
