What You’ll Do

Within the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE), Denver Animal Protection (DAP) protects the safety and welfare of Denver’s animals and residents by fostering the human animal bond. DAP emphasizes public and animal safety and health, encourages responsible pet ownership through education and enforcing compliance with animal-related municipal code requirements, and cares for animals at the Denver Animal Shelter (DAS). As the Volunteer Program and Administrative Assistant, you will primarily support the Volunteer Program, by being one of the main points of contact for volunteers engaging with Denver Animal Shelter for all scheduling, training, onboarding, and administrative needs. This position also supports our Foster Program, our Temporary Pet Housing Program and other administrative duties as needed. This position requires animal handling.

Specifically, as the Volunteer Program and Administrative Assistant you will:

  • Assist with the Volunteer Program in all tasks related to communication, scheduling, onboarding new volunteers, conducting interviews, background checks, and facilitating all new volunteer training including animal handling training and other volunteer position specific training as needed.

  • Assist with the Foster Program with timely communication with foster volunteers and internal staff regarding animals in foster program, posting animals needing foster care on the foster platform, scheduling foster appointments, working with veterinary staff regarding animal medical needs, and assisting with intake and outcome of foster animals to and from the shelter.

  • Support the Temporary Pet Housing program (TPHP) by reviewing and communicating about requests for access to the TPHP, communication with internal staff to determine shelter capacity and inform staff of animal drop off or pick up from the TPHP.

  • Maintain volunteer and animal records with accuracy. This includes but is not limited to maintaining accurate scheduling of volunteer shifts in volunteer software, uploading documents to volunteer management software, saving documents on shared drive as needed, completing appropriate program paperwork, updating Chameleon animal records with notes and timestamps, etc.

  • Have strong animal handling skills, ability to train volunteers on animal handling, administer vaccinations, educate foster volunteers on animal needs and facilitate dog meets between foster dogs and resident dogs.

  • Purchase program supplies and follow program budget and all City and County of Denver fiscal accountability procedures.

  • Support administrative needs including, but not limited to facilitating paperwork and transport for animals with offsite adoption partners, training as the backup for our data analyst, and other duties as needed.

  • Along with all DDPHE staff, actively participate in emergency preparedness and response team activities to support DDPHE’s responsibilities outlined in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan. This may require being ‘on-call’ from time to time respond to emergencies. Training will be provided.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.

  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of experience performing technical or administrative work assisting in an environmental public health program as related to the assignment.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements.

  • Licensure: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
