Job Description
General Definition of Work: Performs responsible semiskilled and human support work in the transportation of pupils to and from school and special events; does related work as required. Reports to the director of operations and area bus coordinator.
Qualifications: - Hold valid VA license to drive a Vehicle.
- Twenty-one years of age.
- Physically able to operate a school vehicle safely.
- Able to read and write.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks: Driving school vehicle; picking up and delivering students to/from school. (The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
- Keeps vehicle clean.
- Performs and records a daily pre-trip inspection immediately prior to transporting students.
- Reports all accidents and completes required reports to the director of operations.
- Washes vehicle; cleans vehicle inside and out.
- Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for school vehicle operations.
- Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspection of school vehicle; reports operating and equipment deficiencies.
- Conducts periodic emergency vehicle evacuation drills.
- Checks vehicle thoroughly after shifts for students and missing or lost items.
- Fuels vehicle as required.
- Transports only authorized students, school personnel, and approved persons.
- Transports students to special events and field trips.
- Records mileage; maintains various records and prepares a variety of reports on activities.
- Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on vehicle; completes disciplinary forms as needed.
- Makes vehicle available for periodic maintenance.
- All other duties as assigned by the director of operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of the problems involved in operating a school vehicle; general knowledge of the geography of the County and the location of streets; skill in the safe operation of a school vehicle; ability to detect malfunctioning equipment; ability to assist children using patience and understanding.
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the eighth grade and some experience operating automotive equipment.
Physical Requirements: This is medium work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
Special Requirements: Possession of an appropriate Virginia driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
