Position Summary:

The Department of History in the College of Arts and Sciences at North Central College invites applications for a tenure-track position specializing in U.S. History before 1865.


The teaching load will consist of five courses per year, including one on U.S. History prior to 1865, one on the Civil War era, and three additional courses at both the introductory and advanced levels, based on the successful applicants interests. The department welcomes candidates with the ability to teach a wide range of thematic courses, including but not limited to African American history, Borderlands history, colonial history, urban history, and gender/sexuality. History faculty also regularly have opportunities to offer courses in the Colleges general education and interdisciplinary programs.


The duties in this role include:

  • Provide instruction for a variety of U.S. History courses, with a specialization in U.S. History before 1865. This position carries a teaching load of 20 credits per academic year, typically fulfilled through five 4-credit hour courses spread over two semesters.
  • Assess students work and provide detailed feedback on how to improve their content knowledge, critical thinking skills, oral and written communication skills, etc.
  • Develop curricula for History courses, minors, graduate certificates, and potential new majors, while collaborating with other academic departments to ensure programs meet the diverse needs of students across disciplines.
  • Mentor undergraduate students through one-on-one and group interactions and independent study opportunities.
  • Engage students in research as applicable.
  • Attend conferences and workshops as necessary to remain active in the field(s) of study; engage with campus resources and professional organizations to further develop teaching and mentoring skills; complete campus-wide training required by the Offices of Academic Affairs and Human Resources.
  • Pursue current and new research activities in the field(s) of study, including new research projects, writing/dissemination of current and future research, and presentation of research at conferences.
  • Perform other departmental duties and attend activities as necessary, including attending department meetings, and participating in committees, task forces, and others as required.

Basic Qualifications:
  • The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in History by August 2026.
  • Applicants must demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring of students, and ongoing scholarship.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with designing and teaching innovative courses that add to the current departmental offerings.
  • Demonstrated excellence in both teaching and research.

Salary Range: Assistant Professor: $62,000 $67,000
Associate Professor: $72,000 $78,000
Professor: $83,000 $88,000

The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the selected candidates experience and qualifications, including equivalent years in rank, training, and field or discipline; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
