Job Description

Company Description

The Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS) is a policy design and implementation partner devoted to improving outcomes for people enrolled in Medicaid. We connect people and ideas to spark insights, build expertise, strengthen leadership, and spread innovations. Across sectors and disciplines, we support our partners to make more effective, efficient, and equitable care possible. The passion, expertise, and creativity of CHCS’ staff make our work possible. We are committed to a diverse workforce that brings distinct perspectives, cultures, races, ethnicities, gender and sexual identities, experiences, and abilities to the table.

Position Overview

CHCS summer interns will work on initiatives related to improving care for people enrolled in Medicaid. CHCS initiatives focus on a variety of topic areas including delivery system and payment reform; leadership and capacity building for public health leaders; and improving care for adults with complex health and social needs, children, and families. In this role, interns will have an opportunity to participate in project activities, develop content knowledge, develop dissemination skills, and engage with different stakeholders and topic areas related to Medicaid policy. In addition to their project work, interns will be part of a cohort and will have the opportunity to build their professional network and skills through intern-specific programming.

This will be a full-time position (40 hours per week). Interns will report to an intern coordinator and the job is based in the CHCS office, near Princeton, NJ (located directly next to a NJ Transit stop). Local candidates are preferred, though candidates who reside outside of the NJ/NY/PA area will be considered. For local candidates, this position offers a hybrid schedule, with one day per week in the office and four days remote. The internship will begin in mid/late May and will last 12-15 weeks.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Participate in relevant project calls, including internal team meetings, calls with funders, and other external stakeholders;
  • Conduct research related to project topics in support of technical assistance and/or written resource development;
  • Support planning and preparation for group learning activities, webinars, or other events;
  • Support notetaking and follow up activities for project meetings; and
  • Develop a final presentation to conclude their internship.
Core Competencies and Requirements
  • Experience, familiarity with, and/or interest in health care policy, public health, and Medicaid;
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong writing and research skills; and
  • Current graduate students in a program in a related field (e.g., public policy, public health, health management, social work) are preferred.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

The employee will perform job duties in a business office or business home environment. Tasks are generally carried out with no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands. This role requires the ability to operate a computer for extended periods of time with standard office equipment. The employee may be required to attend meetings, both on- and offsite, via phone, videoconference or in person. We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace and will consider reasonable accommodations to assist qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this job.

Salary and Compensation

The internship role pays $18/hour.

To Apply

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, writing sample (1-2 pages), and resume via CHCS' Career Center. The cover letter should include the following elements:

  • Why you are interested in this internship opportunity.
  • Any additional professional and/or personal experience that informs your qualifications for the position that otherwise is not obvious from your resume.

This description is not intended to limit the responsibilities of a prospective employee to the duties listed above. Responsibilities may vary based on company and individual capabilities.
