About the Company

SC Steel, LLC was established January 2, 2018, as a subsidiary of FabSouth and acquired the assets of SMI-Owen Steel Company, Inc. on April 1, 2018. SMI-Owen Steel Company had owned the business since 1994 when they acquired it from South Carolina Steel Company. The Upstate South Carolina facility has been in operation at this location since 1952.

Job Overview

We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Structural Welder. This team member will weld, cut, & grind material to meet AWS D1.1 & D1.8 codes in a safe and efficient manner while maintaining high quality. Additionally, this team member performs at a highly proficient and independent level in order to achieve the set goals for safety, quality, delivery, and cost.

Roles and Responsibilities

1. Preheat steel according to instructions, WPS, or AWS specifications.
2. Perform welds to specification including size, profile, length, and finish. Clean and grind welds as appropriate.
3. Use backing bar and run-off tabs as appropriate to complete welds to specifications.
4. Use temperature indicators to determine proper preheat and inter-pass temperatures.
5. Use carbon arc devices and grinders to back gouge welds as necessary to complete welds per specifications.
6. Ability to layout intermittent welds per drawing specifications prior to performing welds.
7. Perform simple fitting activities including layout and application of shear studs welded to structural materials.

Additional Responsibilities

• Ability to read and understand weld symbols, prequalified weld designations, and Weld Procedure Specifications (WPS) .
• Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
• Use of judgement to plan, perform, and make decisions as to the sequences of set-ups, operations, and processes within the limitations of recognized or standard methods and procedures.
• Use of judgement to sequence welds in order to maximize efficiency and minimize weld distortion.
• Understands the concepts of protected zones for seismic weld applications.

• Adjustable crescent wrench
• Allen pack wrenches
• Screwdriver set

Education/Training

High School Diploma or GED

Quality Focus on identifying root causes of malfunctions/breakages and put in place repairs that will eliminate recurrence.

Communication Interface with supervisors and plant management to identify issues and report on successful completion of tasks.

All applicant considered for this position will need to pass a 2G weld test, Mig Structural Steel Welding experience is required.
