The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing various accounting functions and processes in accordance with GAAP principles for the month-end close for AOA and affiliates. Under the supervision of the Assistant Controller:

  • Prepares and maintains Journal Entries, schedules and Reconciliations for timely month-end and year-end processing.
  • In charge of the monthly financial reporting and related variance analysis for AOA and affiliates’ departments.
  • In charge of the payables function, and all duties associated with A/P from voucher approval in the accounts payable system through payment (not entering bills.)
  • Support the preparation of the quarterly reports to the Finance committee and the Board of Trustees.
  • Support the annual audits and IRS 990 work.
  • May review staff accountants’ work.
  • Assists with reporting of net assets and grants to the organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Help develop and maintain new accounting system and AOA / affiliates’ chart of accounts.
  • Reviews monthly internal financial statements with management personnel and research variances as needed.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate timely Journal Entries and Reconciliations for Month-End Close.
  • Maintains automated payables system including bill payments and enters GL accruals when needed.
  • Reviews and approves invoice payment requests within accounts payable system as to appropriate coding, accuracy versus supporting documentation and conformity with the approved budget.
  • Cash / treasury work including reconciling various bank accounts on a daily and monthly basis.
  • Help Assistant Controller in review of staff work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assists in creation, maintenance and review of reports utilized for monthly financial reporting to the departments of the AOA and affiliates.
  • Conducts and/or participates in cost analyses, rate studies and develops meaningful financial reports for the SLT.
  • Together with Assistant Controller, prepare financial statements and management reports to AOA board-level committees, including expenditures graphs for elected officers for review by CFO.
  • Actively participates in the preparation of external audit and tax materials.
  • Assist with the annual budgeting process as needed.
  • Oversees the quarterly 1099 issuance and distributes annual 1099 forms to vendors and the IRS, as appropriate, for the AOA and all affiliates using a third-party company.
  • Potentially enters or directs the entry and maintenance of other accounting records to show receipts and expenditures as assigned.
  • Potentially maintain investment schedules to clearly reflect balances and activities for the month and year to date.
  • Potentially prepares monthly payroll and benefits JEs and other entries for review by Assistant Controller.
  • Other duties as assigned including special projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION OR EQUIVALENTS

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; preferably in Accounting.

Experience: 8+ years of GAAP-based accounting experience. Not-for-profit accounting experience a plus. Dynamics or Sage Intacct a plus.

Licensure or Certification: CPA Certification or CPA Candidate a plus.

  • Be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information

Salary Range: $85,000.00 - $95,000.00 annually
