Summary:

The Child Mind Institute (CMI) is seeking highly skilled and motivated individuals to join our team as program interns for our Selective Mutism (SM) Service. The Selective Mutism Service is an innovative program that helps children with SM overcome their symptoms using state of the art evidence-based behavioral interventions.

CMI is seeking individuals who are interested in being trained in these evidence-based treatment programs and who can commit to 10-15 hours each week starting September 5th 2024 through May 30th, 2025. Program interns are required to be available, in person, Thursdays from 1:00pm-6:30pm, as well as additional times arranged more flexibly with supervisors.

Furthermore, the following dates are mandatory for intern participation, except for those who have a religious observance exemption:

  1. Program Intern Orientation and Selective Mutism Training:
    1. September 5th - 9am-5pm
    2. September 12th - 9:30am-5pm
  2. Fall 2024 One-Day Brave Buddies- Monday, November 11th, 8AM-3PM
  3. February 2025 Four-Day Brave Buddies
    1. Thursday 2/13 12PM-6PM
    2. Friday 2/14 12PM-5PM
    3. Saturday 2/15- Tuesday 2/18, 8AM-3PM
  4. Spring 2025 One-Day Brave Buddies- Friday, May 2nd, 8AM-3PM

Reporting directly to the Directors of the Selective Mutism Service, Anxiety Disorders Center, this is a highly competitive unpaid, part-time internship position located at our NYC headquarters. We strongly encourage applicants to investigate stipend programs through their college placement offices and to pursue independent college study credits for this experience. We can provide any requested documentation to assist students in getting stipends and college credit.

Learning Opportunities:

  • The Program Internship provides a learning and training opportunity for individuals interested in children’s mental health, specifically in the field of selective mutism. They will gain experience by working directly with children with selective mutism. Program participants will be trained in the skills from Parent Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM), an evidence-based treatment for SM, and are taught and coached to facilitate speech across various settings and activities.
  • Attend weekly meetings involving supervision of cases, didactics, and administrative issues with a multidisciplinary team including psychologists, masters-level clinicians, and advanced graduate students.
  • Program Interns will receive an initial 10-hour training that will cover the skills from Parent Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM) and their role in participating in clinical sessions.
  • Program Interns will receive weekly group supervision and monthly individual supervision throughout the internship.
  • Interns are provided with opportunities to shadow clinicians during treatment and evaluation sessions, provide direct support to clinicians during clinical treatment sessions , and receive training to become therapeutic counselors for selective mutism treatment sessions, including our Brave Buddies program, which provides innovative intensive treatment for children with selective mutism.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree acquired or in progress
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Prior experience working with children and/or in a clinical setting
  • Professional demeanor and attitude; ability to interface with families as well as senior leadership, clinicians and staff
  • Team player and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to maintain discretion and integrity
