Position Title : Mycologist (Mushroom Grower)

Reports To: Head of Operation

Job Description:

Psilocybin, present in Psilocybe Cubensis mushrooms, is a psychedelic compound that has shown to have therapeutic use for treatment of mental disorders.

Shields Pharma Inc. is looking for an experienced Mycologist (Mushroom Grower) to work in our Mycology laboratory to develop and conduct studies on strains of Psilocybe Cubensis mushrooms (i.e. psychedelic mushrooms).

The candidate will be responsible for identifying, studying, researching and growing strains of Psilocybe Cubensis mushrooms in one of six controlled environmental grow rooms.

This position relies heavily on comprehensive knowledge and hands-on expertise in mycology laboratory techniques and procedures.

Expertise in plant mycology, plant health, cultivation techniques and environmental controls will be an advantage.

You will collaborate with management to develop and implement innovative growing strategies that align with our commitment to safety, quality, sustainability and excellence.

Main Duties include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Preparing strains of Cubensis mushrooms mycelium liquid cultures, agar plates, slants, etc. in accordance to the company SOPs and sterile techniques.
  • Preparing microbial cultures
  • Preparation and sterilization of culture media
  • Inoculation of mycelium to the various substrates
  • Conducting tests on microorganisms such as bacteria fungi when required
  • Developing and validating new mycological methods for propagating and growing of various Cubensis mushrooms strains.
  • Creating and maintaining a genetic library of Psilocybe Cubensis mushroom strains.
  • Monitoring and maintaining a clean, sterile and safe laboratory environment in compliance with cleanroom standards and regulations
  • Executing environmental monitoring programs in production areas to ensure a sterile and clean environment and compliance with microbial limits.
  • Participate in carrying out mushroom cultivation.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of preparing Cubensis mushrooms mycelium and production outcomes to refine and improve practices continuously.
  • Monitoring fungal growth and behavior in response to environmental changes.
  • Assisting with the investigation of microbiological excursions and deviations
  • Work closely with the Head of Operations to plan and execute growing activities that align with production schedules, ensuring the seamless transition from planting to harvest.
  • Ensuring all documentation including reports, records of procedures, results and data analysis are accurate and in accordance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP) guidelines.

Job Requirements: (Work Status, Qualification, Knowledge and Experience)

  • Must possess Permanent Canadian residency with work permit and/or Canadian citizenship.
  • Must be living in Canada, preferably in Toronto area
  • Minimum a B.Sc. degree in Mycology (Plant Fungal).
  • Must have worked minimum of 2 years in Mycology (Plant Fungal).
  • Proven work experiences as a Mycologist or in a similar role.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of GMP, GDP regulations and quality system guidelines and be well versed in understanding job related USP, BP, EP, and JP compendial test methods and specifications.
  • Must have professional skills and experiences in mycology laboratory techniques and instrumentation.
  • Must be skilled in Microbial culture handling
  • Knowledge in implementation and managing of Environment Monitoring (EM) program
  • Must have a strong understanding of aseptic techniques, sterile, and sanitation, practices in cleanroom laboratory and production environments.
  • Proficiency in microbial identification.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Track record of multi-tasking, being detail-oriented, trouble-shooting/problem solving abilities,
  • Working in a fast-paced environment with minimal instruction on routine work and moderate instruction on new assignments.
  • Time management skills, ability to prioritize samples and tasks in a fast paced environment. Attention to detail.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Proficiency to MS office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is a must
