Job Description

Summary:
Responsible for accurately assigning Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD diagnoses, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes, modifiers, and quantities based on medical record documentation (paper or electronic) for outpatient encounters. Additionally, this role involves training and educating staff on coding issues and actively participating in coding compliance activities.

Education/Certification:
Candidates should hold recognized certifications from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and/or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), such as Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or CCS-P (Certified Coder Specialist - Physician).

Experience:

Minimum of three years of experience in the outpatient setting (physician's office or ambulatory surgery centers) within the last five years.
Experience should include proficient assignment of E&M, CPT, and HCPCS codes across various medical specialties (e.g., Family Practice, Pediatrics, Gastroenterology, OB/GYN).
Experience in ancillary specialties (e.g., PT/OT, Radiology, Lab, Nutrition) that typically do not use E&M codes will not be considered as qualifying experience.
Coding and auditing experience exclusively in specialties like home health, skilled nursing facilities, and rehabilitation care are not qualifying.
Two years of outpatient/ambulatory surgery experience in a military medical facility may be qualifying.
Skills Required:
Excellent computer skills and strong communication abilities are essential for this role.
