Position : ICU Director

Department : Intensive Care Unit

Reports to: Chief Nursing Officer

Job Summary

Provides quality care that is dependent on physician order or through independent nursing interventions based on professional judgment in response to individualized patient needs. Promotes restorative health and/or supportive care using the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care.

Professional Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee the day-to-day operations of the nursing staff and provide leadership and direction.
  2. Ensure quality patient care and safety.
  3. Communicate effectively with staff and patients.
  4. Monitor and assess patient care and develop strategies to improve quality.
  5. Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures.
  6. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care.
  7. Manage budgets and resources to ensure cost-effectiveness.
  8. Develop and implement strategies to promote team morale and professional development.
  9. Identify and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  10. Remain informed of state and federal regulations related to nursing and healthcare.
  11. Adheres to scope of RN practice as outlined by the MS Board of Nursing, regulatory standards and hospital policy
  12. Maintains profession and technical knowledge and pursues professional growth opportunities
  13. Supervises and supports the RN, LPN, Nursing Assistant, Nurse Tech and student
  14. Serves as positive role model and in the preceptor role for new staff and students
  15. Keeping access to protected health information secure and confidential
  16. Collaborates with physician and multidisciplinary team to address patient needs
  17. Appropriately seeks help or guidance from supervisor or other resource people
  18. Adapts to change and prioritizes work
  19. Demonstrates reliable attendance, reports on time and is ready to work at beginning of shift
  20. Completes assigned duties, willingly accepts assignments and assist others to complete work on time
  21. Willing to support unit’s staffing needs by occasionally adjusting work schedule, staying late or working extra
  22. Establishes a safe, compassionate, caring environment for patients and their family
  23. Establishes a safe, supportive work environment that promotes teamwork

Core Duties:

  1. Coordinates patient care by scheduling, consulting and organizing patient activities
  2. Performs admission and ongoing patient assessment and responds appropriately to findings
  3. Establishes a Plan of Care for each patient to address acute physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
  4. Promotes patient engagement by considering specific needs, values and preferences
  5. Establishes care goals, teaches patient/family about health conditions, medications, and self-care skills
  6. Develops discharge plan individualized for patient/ family needs that prevents hospital readmissions
  7. Accurately and completely documents assessments and nursing care in the patient’s medical record
  8. Promotes continuity of care by reporting activities, incidences, and changing patient needs to next caregiver
  9. Demonstrates infection prevention behaviors, consistent hand washing and use of appropriate PPEs
  10. Adheres to safe medication administration while preparing, administering, documenting and monitoring meds
  11. Recognizes safety risk and implements prevention plan for falls, skin breakdown and injury
  12. Contributes to the department’s performance improvement activities
  13. Demonstrates competency in performance of clinical skills

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  1. RN with a minimum of three year of hospital clinical experience who demonstrates competency in the care of adult and/or geriatric patient.
  2. Aptitude for leadership and staff management either through appropriate education or experience. Three years of leadership and/or ICU experience is preferred.

Licensure/Certifications

  1. Current RN license by the Mississippi Board of Nursing
  2. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  3. Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of acute and chronic conditions commonly seen in ICU patients
  2. Knowledge of healthcare regulations and compliance
  3. Knowledge of hospital budgeting, staffing models, resource allocation, and quality assurance
  4. Knowledge of patient safety and quality improvement
  5. Knowledge of ventilators, monitors, infusion pumps, EMR systems, etc.
  6. Proven ability to lead interdisciplinary teams and drive clinical excellence
  7. Strong verbal and written communication skills
  8. Ability to inspire, mentor, and manage a high-performing interdisciplinary team
  9. Ability to maintain composure and make sound decisions during emergencies and high-pressure situations
  10. Ability to interpret clinical and operational data to inform decision-making
  11. Ability to foster collaboration among physicians, nurses, therapist, and administrative staff
  12. Ability to navigate and lead change in dynamic healthcare environments, including adopting new technologies or care models
