Hours of Job
- FT - 1st Shift, working 8 hours per day between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
- Flexibility to start/stop hours, with a potential for remote work.
- No Weekends or Holidays Required
Duties and Key Responsibilities - Codes all diagnoses, treatments, and procedures according to the appropriate classification system for the category of patient encounter.
- Completes coding with a low error rate. Accuracy rate of 98% minimum.
- Meets internal daily productivity standards.
- Perform functions and sequencing for DRG process, to include selection of principal diagnosis and review for complications and/or comorbidities.
- Assists providers and other direct patient care professionals in questions regarding level of detail for diagnostic and procedural entries, according to the organization’s guidelines.
- Queries providers for documentation clarification.
- Provides education and feedback to providers as needed.
- Participates in the Work Area’s quality improvement studies.
- Promotes public relations through prompt and courteous service.
- Fosters patient privacy by maintaining confidentiality in all phases of work.
- Participates in in-services, attends Work Area meetings, and serves on committees as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief of Information Services and Health Information Management Coordinator.
Requirements - Must demonstrate a level of knowledge and understanding of ICD and CPT coding principles.
- Must be able to work effectively with electronic medical record software, coding software (encoder), and scrubber software.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Demonstrated aptitude for quantitative analysis and attention to detail.
Education/Certifications - High School diploma/GED, or equivalent working knowledge.
- Preferred formal training in medical record keeping principles and practices, anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical terminology, standard nomenclature, and classification of diagnoses and operations, and an associate degree in a related healthcare field.
- Preferably possesses a RHIA, RHIT, or coding certification (i.e. CPC, CCS).
Experience - 2-5 years of coding experience preferred.
