Job Description

The Bookstore Manager holds the primary responsibility to develop, implement, and monitor a merchandising and operations plan with an accompanying budget for store operations. Supervision Received: Reports directly to the Controller. Supervision Exercised: The Bookstore Manager directly supervises the Bookstore Associate, Bookstore Cashier, and student workers. Develops budget for store operations that includes sales goals and margins by category. Monitors sales performance including margin by category with comparison toward meeting agreed upon goals and budgeted targets. Assists with the development, implementation, and coordination of marketing and sales promotion activities including in-store merchandising display and advertising. Responsible for overseeing all store operations including opening and closing, cash reconciliation, and deposits. Coordinates the data entry and updating of all textbook and appropriate class information to the Heidelberg website. Maintains accurate inventory through analyses of sales history and proper receiving processes. Plans and implements in a timely manner the cost effective purchase of all store merchandise. Purchases and prices all merchandise, including office supplies for the University. Coordinates cap and gown orders for students, Trustees, faculty and staff for Commencement, Baccalaureate, and Convocation activities. Develop “pop-up” store happenings to include athletic venues, student move-in, alumni events, and community events, etc. Develop and continually enhance relationships with faculty, staff, students, and other constituents. Determine work schedules and supervise all full-, part-time, and student employees. Responsible for FedEx and UPS carrier services for the University. Other related duties as assigned by supervisor. Desired Attributes & Qualifications: Education and Professional Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing; and, Three (3) to five (5) years successful experience in retail management; or, A relevant combination of education and experience. Preferred Education and Experience: Master’s degree in Business, Marketing, or related field; and, Successful retail and / or bookstore management experience in a college or university or similar field of work. Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience in financial analysis and vendor negotiation. Thorough and demonstrated knowledge of and experience with retail sales operations, practices and procedures. Demonstrated excellent relevant written and verbal communication skills. Ability to successfully work independently and lead a team in a fast-paced work environment. A tolerance for ambiguity and a willingness to manage diverse and frequently changing assignments, particularly the ability to do so with a positive attitude and a sense of humor in a high-task environment. Working knowledge of tools and techniques for maintaining an environment where all understand and are committed to providing excellent customer service. Proven experience with POS and inventory systems. An entrepreneurial initiative with the ability to understand, research and stay current with emerging technologies. Ability to occasionally work evenings or weekends. Tools & Equipment Used: Knowledge of operation and use of various office equipment including, but not limited to: personal computer, including spreadsheet, word processing software, and integrated database program, fax machine, copier, telephone, scanner, and printers. A valid driver’s license is preferred. Physical Demands: While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to use arms, hands and fingers to operate and manipulate equipment generally found in an office setting. The employee may be frequently required to be mobile, communicate, and hear. The employee may occasionally be subject to a variety of outdoor environmental conditions including heat, cold, and precipitation. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to ten (10) pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Mental demands include varied degrees of occasional stress while performing job duties. Work Environment: While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee frequently works in an office setting, educational facilities including sports and entertainment venues all of which may be indoor or outdoor.
