The Department of Agriculture at Southeast Missouri State University is seeking an outstanding scientist and educator for a tenure track position in Horticulture and Cannabis Production at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will teach courses primarily in horticulture and cannabis production with the possibility of teaching additional courses in agricultural related fields such as agribusiness, agriculture communication, agriculture education, agriculture system management, agronomy/crops and soils. Therefore, training or experience in these fields is an added advantage. Student advising and mentoring is also a key component at both graduate and undergraduate levels.

The focus of research for this position is cannabis production stemming from its versatility in the community today. The candidate should be able to collaborate with other area stakeholders to address knowledge gaps and needs for the community and build a reputable horticultural and cannabis program.

Primary Responsibilities
  • The core teaching responsibilities are to teach courses in horticulture and cannabis in addition to those of agriculture (agribusiness, agriculture communication, agriculture education, agriculture system management, agronomy/crops and soils) at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Participate in curriculum development, conduct appropriate research or scholarly activity within the discipline, and provide new expertise to help lead the program in new directions.
  • Mentoring students in relation to their academic progress.
  • Participate in service activities including active participation in recruitment and retention activities.
  • Serving on either departmental, college or university committees.
  • Outreach, collaborating with area stakeholders in research and or extension.
  • Professional development, attracting extramural funding and publishing research in peer reviews journals.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned Ph.D. or ABD (with Ph.D. by August 2025) in horticulture with expertise in cannabis production (Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government certified university)
  • Possess theoretical knowledge and practical experience in horticulture
  • Demonstrated commitment to student growth and achievement
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver highly effective teaching in horticulture
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate experiential learning activities
  • Demonstrated commitment to the teacher/scholar model
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community.
  • Evidence of effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
