Archive Technician

ZAI has an opening for an Archives Technician to process the selected official records of a prominent musical group that are housed in a major federal library in Washington, D.C. The Archives Technician will work on a team of two to survey, sort, verify, arrange, label, house, and describe the collection.


Responsibilities:

• Apply archival principles and best practices in the analysis, arrangement, preservation, and description of textual materials
• Identify preservation concerns and rehouse, photocopy, and stabilize archival materials, as needed
• Refine the organization of materials with respect to their provenance
• Understand and follow the Library Division's Processing Manual in all aspects of the project
• Work closely with the ZAI Senior Archives Technician on meeting all requirements of the project
• Collaborate with the federal points of contact to ensure proper handling, transfer, and description of archival materials.
• Perform descriptive work to include creating portions of an Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aid and folder-level or box-level descriptions for a variety of materials
• Track and maintain performance data

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in library, archives, or museum studies, Master's Degree preferred
• 2 - 3 years of experience performing similar work in an archives, including experience with historical materials
• Broad knowledge of the principles, concepts, and techniques of archival work, including analysis, organization, and description of archival material
• Knowledge of American history, culture, documentary studies, oral history and/or other related subject areas and research sources to process and describe archival collections.
• Demonstrated ability to develop effective workflow, tracking, and reporting processes
• Ability to build and maintain professional relationships and communicate effectively with federal library staff
• Ability to identify preservation concerns and perform preservation duties such as rehousing and photocopying, as needed.
• Safely lift, move, and rehouse boxes and archival materials weighing up to 35 pounds.
